Twitter Locks China Embassy’s Account Over Tweet On Uighur Women

Twit­ter said that it had locked the account of China’s embassy in the Unit­ed States over a tweet about Uighur women, CNBC reports.

What Hap­pened: The account in a tweet on Jan. 7 defend­ed the Bei­jing government’s poli­cies in the Xin­jiang region and said that Uighur women are no longer “baby mak­ing machines.”

Accord­ing to Twit­ter, the tweet vio­lat­ed its pol­i­cy against dehu­man­iza­tion. “We pro­hib­it the dehu­man­iza­tion of a group of peo­ple based on their reli­gion, caste, age, dis­abil­i­ty, seri­ous dis­ease, nation­al ori­gin, race, or eth­nic­i­ty,” a Twit­ter spokesper­son told CNBC.
