Mul­ti­ple sci­en­tists at major insti­tu­tions around the world are sound­ing an alarm over what they say was an incom­plete and unre­li­able inves­ti­ga­tion by the World Health Orga­ni­za­tion into the ori­gins of the SARS-Cov­‑2 virus. The team, led by an inter­na­tion­al cohort of researchers, said last week that it was “extreme­ly unlike­ly” that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Insti­tute of Virol­o­gy, an infec­tious dis­ease lab­o­ra­to­ry that has for years con­duct­ed exper­i­ments with coro­n­avirus­es — some of it fund­ed by the U.S. government.
