CAMP PENDLETON — “Expect to start by get­ting wet.”

That’s about all the 138 new­ly mint­ed grunts cho­sen to par­tic­i­pate in the new Infantry Marine Course, or IMC, pilot had been told about the final two-day cap­stone test of their skills. But on Wednes­day after­noon, just before the start of the event, they got the full sce­nario: They’d be dropped from a small boat into the South Chi­na Sea and have to swim, in full com­bat gear, 300 yards to a near­by ship.

For the pur­pose of train­ing, they approx­i­mat­ed this by water­proof­ing their buoy­ant packs, get­ting hosed down with their rifles …
